About this Issue

This oversized one-shot is the sole in-continuity comic record of Ang Lee's 2003 Hulk film, preserving the movie's psychoanalytic, family-tragedy spin on Bruce Banner's origins in sequential-art form at a moment when Marvel's cinematic ambitions were still finding their footing. It serves as the first — and only — comics appearance of the Earth-400083 incarnation of the Hulk, making it the canonical print debut of that alternate-universe Bruce Banner. As a mid-production-era movie tie-in, it also captures the early-2000s publishing practice of synchronizing comic releases with theatrical dates, timed to arrive on shelves roughly two weeks before the film opened. That cultural snapshot — of Marvel aggressively cross-promoting its first ambitious arthouse superhero film — gives the issue a clear place in the timeline of Marvel's transition from comics publisher to Hollywood franchise.

History

The script was adapted by Incredible Hulk series writer Bruce Jones, working directly from the screenplay by John Turman, Michael France, and James Schamus. Interior art was handled by penciler Mark Bagley, then riding high on Ultimate Spider-Man, inked by Scott Hanna and colored by Ian Hannin. The cover was contributed by fan-favorite Hulk artist Dale Keown, whose distinctive rendering of the Green Goliath gave the package instant shelf appeal. Editor Ralph Macchio oversaw the project under editor-in-chief Joe Quesada, and the book went on sale June 4, 2003 — sixteen days before the film's theatrical debut on June 20.
