A racing driver nicknamed "Hotshot" discovers a trick at the starting line involving the traffic light—jumping on the amber rather than the green—which gives him an unfair advantage in amateur races. Six days later, at a county fair event, Hotshot uses this technique again to win, but his rival Ackerman exposes the cheat. After Hotshot admits his cautious streak had made him rely on the trick, Ossie Neaves and the other racers give him encouragement to race fairly, and he demonstrates he can win legitimately in the final competition.
