Hopalong Cassidy chases a runaway mule over a cliff after it breaks free from a well-trained pack animal, barely surviving the fall. Later, he pursues a villain named Joe who has absconded with eighteen thousand dollars in stolen gold and is hiding in Butte, Montana. Hopalong discovers Joe's location through a letter Joe wrote to a woman named Susan, offering to have her join him, and sets out to track him down and recover the stolen payroll.
