From Dutch publisher De Harmonie, this 2014 collection by Stefan Verwey — whose line work graces both the interior and cover — opens with a wonderfully dry visual joke: tiny figures struggle to heave open an enormous book, one perched on top and two more straining at its cover below, while a composed bystander simply watches. Verwey's clean, spare linework gives the gag an elegant simplicity that feels at home in the best tradition of European cartooning. A charming reminder that sometimes the hardest part of reading is just getting started.
