“Closing Time: 5”

Part five of "Closing Time" arrives in this January 2001 DC series, and the cover sets a wonderfully low-key tone amid the series' usual intensity — three men in military fatigues are lounging together, two of them smoking cigarettes, while one casually flips through a Sgt. Rock comic book. A stern USMC-capped figure stands behind them, arms at his sides, looking distinctly unimpressed with the relaxed atmosphere. John McCrea's linework (both pencils and inks) gives the scene a lived-in camaraderie that's equal parts humor and grit, perfectly capturing the Garth Ennis sensibility that made Hitman such a distinctive corner of the DC universe.
