“The Roanoke Colony: America's First Mystery”
About this Collection

This volume from the History Comics series explores the enduring mystery of the Roanoke Colony, the late-16th-century English settlement that vanished without a trace. Through a graphic nonfiction narrative, it examines the historical context, the challenges faced by the colonists, and the theories surrounding their disappearance, offering a compelling look at one of America's oldest unsolved puzzles.

"The Roanoke Colony: America's First Mystery" presents a gripping, firsthand account of one of history’s most enduring enigmas, told through the voices of Manteo and Wanchese—members of the Croatan and Roanoke peoples. Written and illustrated by Chris Schweizer, with colors by Liz Trice Schweizer, this issue blends historical narrative with vivid storytelling, exploring the failed attempts to establish a colony on Roanoke Island and the tensions that followed. The cover, also by Chris Schweizer, captures the haunting atmosphere of the lost settlement.

Manteo, a Croatan, and Wanchese, a Roanoke, narrate the history of the lost Colony of Roanoke. Sir Walter Raleigh is granted a patent to found an English colony, but ignores the more hospitable Chesapeake Bay in favor of a colony on Roanoke Island, not far from Spanish shipping lanes, hoping it would make a good base for privateering. Poorly located, without a decent harbor, and managed by governors who develop poor relations with the natives, the first colony fails within a year. A second colony is immediately established, but three years later is found to have completely disappeared.
