One story, "The Sickness of Square," follows Square the cat who feels unwell and receives dubious advice from his friend Heppity the rabbit, leading Square to complete various exhausting chores like mowing the lawn and painting a fence, only to discover a nail in his shoe was the cause of his discomfort all along. Another story involves animal characters being interrupted during an important meeting and later enjoying a jam session with music and dancing.
When a young female cat yearns for a fancy new dress to attend the Fish Fest with Tommy, she refuses his invitation—only for a neighborhood scuffle over a rival to lead both of them to discover what "hep" really means. As the story unfolds, a visiting reformer from Delaware arrives with plans to stamp out the local jive scene, setting the stage for the Hot Hepcats to show him exactly what he's up against. It's a playful romp through 1950s cat culture that proves style, attitude, and the right music can change even the most stubborn square's mind.
When a new arrival named Oswald wins over Kitty with his sophisticated airs and highbrow talk, Tommy finds himself cast aside—but he's not ready to concede defeat. With advice from a street-smart friend and training from the Jitterbug himself, Tommy devises a plan to reclaim her heart using the one thing he does best: jive and rhythm.
The Hepcats learn that Lowdown High's Founder's Day celebration will feature a square dance instead of the jive session they were hoping for, but when a mysterious troublemaker crashes the practice session and spins things into jitterbug chaos, the whole school gets caught in the middle. With the help of Heppity Hare's quick thinking and some clever photography, Tommy and Kitty turn the tables on the strict teacher behind the square-dance decree—and end up proving that a little swing might just win over even the strictest chaperones.
The Hepcats plan to exclude girls from their brand-new club meeting on the night of the big shindig, but the girls have other ideas—they track down some visiting plumbers to be their escorts and show up at the Kitty-Kola to make the boys jealous. When the Hepcats spot them dancing with their dates, things escalate into an all-out brawl that turns the dance floor into absolute chaos.
