Clark, born in Virginia in 1752 of Scottish and English heritage, becomes a surveyor, trapper, pioneer, and soldier, eventually called "the Washington of the West." After schoolmates convince him to pursue mathematics and surveying, Clark undertakes an expedition into the Ohio Valley where he settles land and encounters restless pioneers planning to invade the region; he does not need to be coaxed to join them. The story follows Clark through military conflict with Native Americans, ambushes, and battles that ultimately lead to peace in the Ohio Valley by 1795, when another party of emigrants settles at his cabin. A separate story about a young Jesuit missionary details his efforts to teach the Huron and Indian children, including instruction in agriculture, fishing, crafts, and faith, though his mission faces tragedy when the Iroquois attack, resulting in the deaths and torture of the Huron Braves and the Jesuits themselves.
