“How Mirka Caught a Fish”
About this Collection

The third volume of the Hereville series follows young Mirka, a troll-fighting Orthodox Jewish girl, as she embarks on an underwater adventure to catch a magical fish. Written and illustrated by Barry Deutsch, this graphic novel continues Mirka's quirky, fantasy-infused coming-of-age story with humor and heart.

In "How Mirka Caught a Fish," Mirka defies her stepmother’s orders and ventures into the woods with her younger sister Layele, only to stumble upon a mysterious wishing fish that pulls them into a hidden, supernatural realm. Written and illustrated by Barry Deutsch, with inks by Adrian Wallace and colors by Jake Richmond, this heartfelt tale unfolds as Fruma—once a girl who faced the same fish long ago—returns to guide Mirka through a Shabbos-bound journey of faith, family, and quiet courage. The cover, also by Barry Deutsch, captures the story’s delicate balance of wonder and tension.

Against her stepmother's instructions, Mirka takes her little sister Layele into the woods where they encounter a wishing fish, and soon the girls are trapped in the fish's supernatural world. Fruma, who encountered the fish in her own youth, rescues Mirka, but cannot free Layele. Fruma insists that rescue efforts must stop for Shabbos. Gaining strength from the observance, they then free Layele and neutralize future threats from the fish, although their house is wrecked in the process. Mirka finally acknowledges Fruma as her mother.
