Mirka, 11 years old, is a smart, imaginative girl in an Orthodox Jewish community who one day meets an actual witch and her talking pig. The pig vows revenge on Mirka for having stolen a grape from his garden, but she later saves him from the bullies who torment her brother, Zindel. As a reward, the witch tells Mirka, who fancies becoming a dragonslayer much moreso than she does becoming a wife, where to find a proper sword right in their hometown of Hereville, but she'll need her stepmother Fruma's advice on fighting trolls.
