“Hereville: How Mirka Got Her Sword”

In "Hereville: How Mirka Got Her Sword," 11-year-old Mirka—a clever, imaginative girl in the tight-knit Orthodox Jewish town of Hereville—finds herself entangled in a surprising adventure after meeting a witch and her talking pig, who demands retribution for a stolen grape. When Mirka later helps the pig escape from bullies tormenting her brother Zindel, the witch rewards her with a cryptic clue to a real sword hidden in their own town, hinting that the path to becoming a dragonslayer may begin closer than she imagined—though she’ll need her stepmother Fruma’s wisdom to face the trolls that guard it. Written and illustrated by Barry Deutsch, with colors by Jake Richmond and Barry Deutsch, and a cover by Barry Deutsch, this heartfelt and whimsical tale blends humor, tradition, and quiet courage in a story that feels both timeless and refreshingly original.

Mirka, 11 years old, is a smart, imaginative girl in an Orthodox Jewish community who one day meets an actual witch and her talking pig. The pig vows revenge on Mirka for having stolen a grape from his garden, but she later saves him from the bullies who torment her brother, Zindel. As a reward, the witch tells Mirka, who fancies becoming a dragonslayer much moreso than she does becoming a wife, where to find a proper sword right in their hometown of Hereville, but she'll need her stepmother Fruma's advice on fighting trolls.
