About this Issue

Hellfire Gala Guide #1 is the official companion one-shot to one of the most structurally ambitious X-Men crossovers of the Krakoan era — a 12-part event that unfolded across all ongoing X-titles over a single in-universe night, debuting the first official Krakoan X-Men team (Cyclops, Jean Grey, Rogue, Synch, Sunfire, Wolverine, and fan-elected Polaris) and revealing the terraforming of Mars into Planet Arakko. The Guide itself is a genuine artifact of that ambition: a free, 28-page art-book that Marvel used to showcase the event's unprecedented investment in high-fashion character design — a first for a mainstream superhero crossover at this scale. By framing mutant couture as a legitimate storytelling device (each costume engineered to reflect its wearer's powers), the issue helped cement the Hellfire Gala concept as a recurring annual institution that would shape the entire Krakoan Age through 2024. The event's cultural footprint has since extended beyond print into animation and video games, underscoring how fully the Guide's opening gambit resonated.

History

The Hellfire Gala concept was seeded as early as Marauders #7 and #10 and X-Men #16, before Marvel formally announced the fan election in January 2021. Writer Gerry Duggan has described how the creative team convened at an X-Retreat in Chicago roughly a year before publication to ratify the large-scale story and production plans, deliberately scheduling development time so artists could collaborate on the fashion designs. Russell Dauterman — already embedded in the Marauders creative family — was tapped by editor Jordan D. White to lead the costume initiative, drawing on runway couture references from Alexander McQueen, Iris van Herpen, Balmain, and others while filtering each look through the specific power-set of its mutant wearer. The resulting designs were first revealed to the public by Entertainment Weekly on March 16, 2021, and the Guide was released April 28, 2021 — about six weeks before the crossover itself launched in June — functioning as both a hype document and a standalone collector's art object.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Published April 28, 2021 by Marvel Comics; released at no cover price as a free promotional one-shot (28 pages).
  • Written/introduced by Marvel Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski; designed by Tom Muller; interior art by Russell Dauterman (with Matt Wilson on colors) and additional fashion-design art by Valerio Schiti, Alberto Foche, Alex Lins, and Bob Quinn.
  • Serves as the official fashion and event guide to the inaugural 2021 Hellfire Gala — a 12-part crossover running through Marauders, X-Force, Hellions, Excalibur, X-Men, New Mutants, X-Corp, S.W.O.R.D., Way of X, Wolverine, X-Factor, and the double-sized Planet-Size X-Men #1.
  • Contains an in-universe interview with Emma Frost (the gala's hostess) and showcases the full suite of Krakoan gala fashion designs that also appeared as variant covers across all 12 tie-in issues.
  • Dauterman's designs incorporate each character's mutant powers into the fashion (e.g., Storm's cape is literal clouds, Jean Grey holds her headpiece aloft telekinetically, Emma Frost's diamond form serves as her jewelry).
  • The Guide previews the event that would reveal the first official Krakoan X-Men team — Cyclops, Jean Grey, Rogue, Synch, Sunfire, Wolverine (Laura Kinney), and fan-elected Polaris — who debuted in Planet-Size X-Men #1 (June 2021, written by Gerry Duggan, art by Pepe Larraz).
  • X-Men #21, also part of the crossover, marked Jonathan Hickman's final issue writing the X-Men title, making the Gala a creative transition point as well as a narrative milestone.
  • The Hellfire Gala concept has been adapted into the animated series X-Men '97 (referenced via a Daily Bugle article) and served as the full thematic basis for Marvel Rivals Season 2 (April–July 2025), including a dedicated Krakoa map and the playable debut of Emma Frost in that game.
