“Imaginary Love”

Heart Throbs #75 brings DC's National Romance Group series to a flower shop setting charged with tension — a charming man in a blue suit leans over the counter with a bouquet of roses, telling a red-haired woman in white that she simply has to be the girl he's always called, asking her to dinner tonight. Meanwhile, a blonde woman in green looks on from the foreground with a complicated, quietly pained expression, making the cover's tagline — "Too Good to Be True!" — feel entirely earned. John Romita's cover pencils and inks bring a polished, warmly cinematic quality to the drama, and for twelve cents in 1961, this issue also features the interior story "Imaginary Love.
