After initially reading a ghost story to steel himself, Hap encounters a shadowy figure and engages it in combat, discovering his opponent to be a dupe who flees. That night, Hap performs as a singing crooner for an audience, where he wows the crowd with his entertainment. Later, Hap becomes entangled in a case involving a mysterious magician named Mysterious Miller, whose bag of magic escape chains goes missing—ultimately revealed to be in the possession of the mysterious Miller himself, who was waiting at the station asking for his bag.
Hap Hazard accepts a dare to spend the night in the supposedly haunted farmhouse outside town—unaware that his pals Stinky and Pudge are planning to scare him with sheets and chains, and that a dangerous escaped prisoner of war has taken shelter in the very same building. When things go bump in the night, Hap must figure out what's real and what's just his friends' idea of a prank.
Hap Hazard dreams up a scheme to entertain the crowd at a school dance—he'll lip-sync to a recording while his pal Zip runs the record player from behind the curtain—but when the audience goes wild over his fake performance, a local radio station owner offers him a real contract. Now Hap's got to find a way out of a broadcast he can't possibly pull off, and his schoolmates are determined to make sure he does.
Hap takes a job as an assistant to Mysterious Miller, a master magician performing at the local theatre—but a mix-up at the train station means Hap accidentally grabbed Miller's suitcase containing his special escape chains, and has already sold them off for scrap. When Hap tries to fix the situation by stuffing the magician's bag with whatever chains and locks he can find around home, he unwittingly sabotages Miller's famous escape act during opening night. What follows is a hilariously chaotic performance where nothing goes according to plan, and Hap learns that good intentions don't always lead to smooth magic tricks.
