This Gwandanaland Comics collection reprints The Beyond, Ace's "Weird, Spooky, Supernatural Stories" anthology, and the cover by John Chilly sets the tone perfectly — a towering skeletal figure draped in white robes looms over a checkerboard floor, declaring that three more people have been "eliminated from the chessboard of humanity," while terrified men and women scatter and stumble around an open book marked with birth and death dates spanning 1947 to 1950. Chilly's linework crackles with that delicious pre-Code dread, making the Grim Reaper feel genuinely menacing rather than campy.
