“The Ugly Duckling”

In "The Ugly Duckling," a 2008 tale from Grimm Fairy Tales, Robin Summers—once transformed by a mysterious potion into a swan-like beauty—returns to her high school reunion a decade later, only to find her past and present colliding in unexpected ways. Reunited with Ted, her former quiet friend now changed in his own right, the evening takes a sharp turn when he invites her home, hinting at long-buried feelings and a reckoning long overdue. Written by Michael Dolce and illustrated by Jeff Zornow, with colors by Garry Henderson and Kieran Oats, the issue’s cover by Romano Molenaar, Ryan Stegman, and William Tucci captures the eerie elegance of this twisted fairy tale.

It has been ten years since Robin Summers drank a potion given to her by a substitute high school teacher (Belinda) and turned from an ugly duckling into a beautiful swan. She attends her class reunion and reconnects with Ted, her former geeky friend who has gone through a transformation of his own. Ted takes her home and has his revenge for having Robin snub him after she became beautiful.
