Después de su expedición al Turquestán Ruso, Maillart viaja a Manchukuo como corresponsal del diario francés Le Petit Parisien. En Dairén comprende lo peligroso de su situación en plena ocupación japonesa en China y opta por ir a Pekín. En Pekín se encontró con Peter Fleming, y junto a los esposos Smigunov deciden atravesar el Asia. En Lanchow la policía los retienen y envían a los Smigunov de regreso a Pekín, por lo que Maillart y Fleming continúan solos su travesía llegando a Kotan, después de atravesar el desierto de Taklamakán, y de ahí a Srinagar donde sus caminos los separaron.
