En 1875 y financiado por Oscar Dickson, Adolfo Nordenskiold zarpa de Tromsö (Noruega) a bordo del "Proven" hacia el Mar de Kara buscando un camino para comerciar con Asia. Llegó al río Yenisei y río arriba a bordo del "Alexander" a Yeniseisk donde conoció a Sibiriakov quien le financió su segunda expedición a fin de comerciar con Europa. De regreso a Estocolmo y a bordo del "Ymer" regresó al río Yenisei. En Igarka, Sibiriakov le propone descubrir el Paso del Nordeste. En 1878 auspiciado por el rey Oscar II y a bordo del "Vega" atravesó la costa norte de Asia y cruzó el estrecho de Behring.
