Desde joven Domingo Badía mostró inclinaciones por la cultura musulmana y perfeccionó su afición de arabista junto a su amigo Simón de Rojas. Juntos viajaron a Londres donde Mohamed El Bahili le propuso servir a favor de Egipto contra Francia bajo la identidad de Alí Bey. Domingo no aceptó la oferta. Años después por encargo de Manuel Godoy emprendió una misión para derrocar al sultán Moley Solimán pero la misión fue abortada. De regreso a España y luego de emitir su informe a Napoleón, Piloty lo convenció de una última misión (a favor de Francia) pero murió envenenado por El Bahili.
