Antes de empezar su empresa de circunnavegación, Bougainville empieza a recordar su infancia, su tratado de cálculo integral, a Madame Pompadour, su trabajo como Secretario de la Embajada de Francia en Londres, su membresía en la Real Sociedad de Londres, su campaña en Canadá bajo el mando de Montcalm, su regreso a Francia, su intento de colonización de las Islas Malvinas y la orden de Luis XV de entregárselo a España. Partió de Brest y después para hacer entrega de las Islas Malvinas, prosiguió su viaje haciendo escala en Tahití y en las Molucas. Finalmente regresó a Francia luego de 3 años.
