Tras la negativa del Dr. Livingstone de acompañar a Stanley, éste retorna a Zanzíbar y de ahí parte a Londres. Tiempo después, Gordon Bennet, propietario del New York Herald y Lord Burnham organizaron en conjunto una nueva expedición para Stanley en el África. Partieron con una caravana de más de 300 hombres y luego de 3 años de arriesgadas y penosas aventuras, la empresa de Stanley llegó a tener éxito, logrando atravesar África navegando a través del Río Congo hasta llegar a su desembocadura en el Océano Atlántico.
