Siguiendo órdenes de Felipe II de España, el Comandante Blas Ruiz y sus hombres se internaron en el Río Mekong para auxiliar al rey de Camboya Fra-Uncar a quien los siameses (tailandeses) querían derrocar. Al llegar se enteran que Fra-Uncar ya no es rey y son tomados prisioneros por los camboyanos pero lograron liberarse y llegar a Filipinas. Al año siguiente, y con más hombres, Ruiz regresó a Camboya y llegó a un trato con Anacaporam, el nuevo rey. Mientras tanto el Capitán Gallinato se internó por la selva y "descubrió" Angkor-Thom. Muchos años después Mouhot "redescubre" Angkor.
