Siendo niño, Cook fue dejado por su padre en una tienda como aprendiz, pero el maltrato y un incidente con el tendero hicieron fugar al pequeño James. En Hull fue admitido en un barco que transportaba carbón. Cook aprendió rápidamente el oficio ejerciéndolo hasta ser admitido en la Marina Real. Participó en el sitio de Quebec bajo las órdenes de James Wolfe y al terminar la guerra levantó mapas de las costas de Terranova. En 1768, Lord Awke lo nombró comandante de una expedición científica a Tahití a bordo del "Endeavour". A esta le siguieron dos más, falleciendo Cook durante el último.
