In 1870, Ciara O'Dwyer and her daughter emigrate to America from Ireland. Her husband Fintan, who was supposed to follow her, never arrives. She survives and makes her way out of the Five Points slums in New York. In 1960, Johnny McCormack arrives in New York from Galaway,Ireland seeking fame. He settles in Greenwich Village, encounters a ghost and eventually gains recognition when he performs 'Ciara's Song' on the national stage. In 2010, inspired by the songs of Johnny McCormack, wealthy Irishman Lewis Healy comes to America to trace the connection between himself, Johnny and Ciara.
