Godzilla vs. X-Men #1

History

The entire 'Godzilla vs. Marvel' crossover initiative grew out of licensing conversations that Marvel had been conducting with Toho Company Ltd. for years prior to 2024, initially focused only on reprint rights before both parties agreed to expand the collaboration into new original stories. Series editor Mark Paniccia shepherded the project, with each one-shot assigned to a different creative team matched thematically to a specific era of Marvel history; the X-Men installment was deliberately set in the 1990s and handed to Fabian Nicieza—who had written the flagship X-Men and X-Force titles during that decade—with art by Emilio Laiso, colors by Federico Blee, and lettering by VC's Clayton Cowles, under editor Darren Shan. Nicieza structured his script around the shared conceptual origins of both franchises—giant robots as common antagonists for both the X-Men (Sentinels) and Godzilla—and built an original villain from that overlap, while also weaving in references to the 1955 Toho film Godzilla Raids Again to establish in-world continuity. The issue was released on May 14, 2025, received a second printing on June 25, 2025, and was subsequently collected in the trade paperback Godzilla vs. the Marvel Universe, published September 30, 2025.
