“All's Fair in Love”

A full moon glows behind a couple locked in a close kiss on this evocative 1951 DC cover, while nearby a young woman in yellow and a boy in a cap watch from beside a small campfire — the cover tagline promising a tale of heartache: "No Love of My Own!" At ten cents for 52 big pages, Girls' Romances #9 delivered generous value for readers who loved their romance comics with genuine emotional stakes. The warm nighttime setting and that telling cluster of onlookers set the mood perfectly for "All's Fair in Love.

Jane and Randy have been friends since childhood: she loves him, but he thinks of her as only a friend. Jane is elected Queen of the local festival, and chooses Scott, a complete stranger, as her consort. Scott falls for Jane, but she’s still carrying a torch for Randy. As Queen, she has to choose between Randy and Scott’s inventions; Randy asks her to cheat for him, which kills her love. Scott wins the contest fairly and Jane and Scott embrace.
