“No Love For a Career Girl”

In "No Love For a Career Girl," Bill Everett’s heartfelt storytelling brings us to a small town where past choices echo in the present. Paula, a successful novelist returning after a decade, reconnects with her old friend Elinor, who confesses her lingering feelings for Johnny and regrets trading love for security—while Paula admits she sacrificed romance for her career, only to find her former fiancé married. The story, drawn with quiet intensity by Everett and spotlighted on a cover by Carl Burgos, captures the bittersweet weight of choices made, setting the stage for a novel born from real heartache.

Paula, now a well-known novelist, returns to her hometown after 10 years. Her best friend Elinor is married to businessman William, but confesses that she’s always loved Johnny. They broke up because she wanted financial security, and now leads an “empty” life. Paula says she postponed marrying Greg to concentrate on her career, and he married someone else. “We’ve both been pretty stupid!” Paula decides this will be the plot of her next novel.
