Ghosts #26

DC's Ghosts #26 (May 1974) delivers exactly the kind of chilling supernatural drama this anthology series promised — the cover by Nick Cardy captures a towering skeletal specter looming over a bedridden figure, its robed arms raised in an ominous gesture while a woman in a red dress looks on in horror, crying out "Doctor, why don't you tell me — will he live?" Inside, Leo Dorfman and Don Perlin contribute "The Freaky Phantom of Watkins Glen," one of three tales of the weird and supernatural collected here alongside "Specter in the Flames" and "Dark Destiny." For fans of early-'70s DC horror, this is a fine example of the line doing what it did best — presenting the macabre with just enough humanity to make it genuinely unsettling.
