Gene Autry investigates mysterious tracks with a split hoof that match those of a blue roan horse belonging to a man named Garrick, leading him to suspect foul play in a local incident. When Gene and his friend Len visit a nearby ranch, they discover a woman named Laura with a wounded leg who claims a slug merely nicked her, and they help her to a station. In a separate story titled "Champ," Gene cares for a prized white colt named Whitey at a private corral in the cool hills, though he expresses concern about keeping purebred Arabian mares and colts in the unfamiliar horse country.
