This issue contains two main stories. In "Voice in the Night," a Buck Desmond adventure by Dick Kraus, Buck discovers that the outlaw Snake Mason has taken over the town of Crow Creek through intimidation and protection rackets, forcing the townspeople to pay him regularly. Buck decides to confront Mason to stop his reign of terror. The second story, "Go Fly a Kite!," depicts Gabby Hayes attempting to fly kites as a birthday gift for a child, but trouble erupts when he tells a notorious gold spur gang to "go fly a kite," leading to a chaotic confrontation involving the gang and various townspeople.

Gabby Hayes stumbles onto a corrupt scheme when a charismatic stranger named Ranny Quickdraw appears in town just before the sheriff's election, dramatically capturing two notorious outlaws to swing votes in his favor. Suspicious of the newcomer's convenient timing and murky background, Gabby investigates—only to discover that Quickdraw and his gang have orchestrated the whole thing, and now they're plotting to run Rawhide as outlaws-turned-lawmen. With evidence in hand and the clock ticking before the polls close, Gabby must expose the conspiracy before a town full of grateful voters makes a terrible mistake.

When Gabby Hayes claims he's got a way with women, the rough-and-tumble Sagebrush Sal—a former rodeo star who's been terrorizing the town of Rawhide—seems like the perfect test of his charm. After getting soundly thrashed by the formidable gal, Gabby hatches a theory: if a new dress can transform one woman, maybe it'll work on Sal too. What happens when Gabby discovers the key to winning over the toughest woman in the West—and what it costs him—makes for a lesson in never underestimating the unpredictability of the fairer sex.

The Fashion Plate

When the storekeeper Chester Drape's fancy eastern fashions gather dust in Rawhide, Gabby Hayes has a bold idea: get the town's most influential citizen to wear the formal duds and start a trend. When tough old Gabby Hayes is mockingly challenged by the loudmouth Pete Moss over his kite-flying hobby, a wild wind and a tumble lead him to discover a gold spur—the signature calling card of the notorious Gold Spur Gang. Following Pete back to the outlaw hideout, Gabby finds himself outnumbered and trapped, but he's got one clever idea: fly a kite rigged with wire to signal Sheriff Slim Daggle for help. With the whole gang pulling frantically at the line and a storm bearing down, Gabby's makeshift signal becomes an unexpected weapon that changes everything.
