In G.I. Joe #35, a laid-back furlough to California turns chaotic when three Joes intercept the Dreadnoks joyriding on Zartan’s new holographic motorcycle—only for the chase to escalate into a high-stakes game of deception. With Zartan deploying a chopper disguised as a bus and a mysterious passenger vanishing mid-flight, the mission blurs the line between illusion and reality. Written by Larry Hama and illustrated by Rod Whigham, Bob Camp, and Mark Bright, with inks by Andy Mushynsky and Mike Esposito, and colors by George Roussos, the issue’s standout cover by John Byrne captures the tension in a single, striking image.

Three Joes are off to California on furlough to surf when they run across three of the Dreadnoks taking a joy ride on Zartan's new holographic motorcycle, which is damaged in the scuffle. Zartan later picks up two of them in a transport chopper holographically disguised as a bus, with Buzzer captured by the Joes, after being told of their joyride by Bludd and the Baroness. The old lady Zartan picks up as a passenger mysteriously disappears after the chopper lands back in Springfield before she can be killed, but it was a disguise as the disguise was discarded.
