When the pilot’s plane jams mid-flight, it’s the doughboy who saves the day by shooting down enemy fighters, only to later face a deadly gas attack. The pilot, stranded and injured, still manages to clear the gas and ram a tank, proving his courage. But in the end, both are left stunned by the same letter: Tammy has married a desk jockey. Written by Hank Chapman and illustrated by Jerry Grandenetti, with inks by Grandenetti and letters by Joe Letterese, this poignant wartime tale unfolds with grit and quiet heartbreak. The cover, by Joe Kubert, captures the moment of emotional reckoning.
In "The Wounded Won't Wait!" from G.I. Combat #108 (1964), Lt. Stuart leads his three injured men toward an army hospital, only to find help in an unexpected place—Sgt. Rock and a handful of Easy Company soldiers, all of them wounded themselves. As they push through enemy fire and dodge advancing tanks, the group reaches a field hospital under siege, where the real test begins.
In a wartime romance set during WW1, a pilot and a doughboy both fight to win Tammy’s heart, vowing to return as the war’s greatest hero. When the pilot’s plane malfunctions mid-flight, the doughboy takes up the guns and earns glory in the sky—only for the tide to turn again when a gas attack leaves the doughboy’s unit stranded, and the pilot sacrifices his damaged plane to save them. Both men, now heroes in hospital, are stunned to learn Tammy has married a desk jockey.
