Future State: Nightwing #1
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeFuture State: Nightwing #1 is the first solo Nightwing chapter of DC's 2021 linewide Future State event, delivering the in-universe debut of Dick Grayson as the field commander of Gotham's 'Mask Resistance' against the Magistrate's totalitarian occupation — a role that sharpened his character into something distinct from any prior iteration. The issue also stages the first meeting between Dick Grayson's Nightwing and Jace Fox's Next Batman, a generational torch-pass that reframed the Batman/Nightwing dynamic by putting Dick firmly in the mentor seat. It introduced Peacekeeper-06 (Elizabeth Marcus) as a recurring antagonist and helped establish the dystopian Gotham shared across the entire Future State Batman family of titles as one of DC's most cohesive alternate-future settings of the era.

The issue was written by Andrew Constant — then a relative newcomer to DC — and illustrated by Nicola Scott, with colors by Ivan Plascencia and letters by Wes Abbott; it published on January 19, 2021, with a cover date of March 2021. It emerged from DC's editorial decision to replace its entire regular monthly line for two months with Future State, a line of possible-future limited series that flowed out of the Dark Nights: Death Metal event and was designed to seed the subsequent Infinite Frontier publishing relaunch. The 'A-Day' catastrophe and Magistrate occupation framework had been seeded in the main Batman titles under James Tynion IV, so Constant's script had a rich, pre-established world to work within for this two-issue arc titled 'Once Upon a Night in Gotham.'
