Funny Stuff launched in Summer 1944 under DC (then National Allied Publications), with the Three Mouseketeers — a Dumas parody drawn by Ronald Santi — as its cover feature from issue #1. The series was edited under DC's humor division with Larry Nadle as a key editorial figure, and the recurring strips were produced by a rotating stable that included Sheldon Mayer, Rube Grossman, Otto Feuer, Howie Post, and Woody Gelman, with Gelman and Feuer sharing writing and penciling duties on the flagship Dodo and the Frog feature during the early-1950s run that encompasses issue #55. By 1950, with the Three Mouseketeers strip having wound down around 1948, the Dodo and the Frog had consolidated its place as the series' dominant strip, reflecting a broader editorial narrowing that would eventually lead to the title's formal rename.
