Volume 5 of Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe's Frieren draws a striking ensemble through what appears to be a grand, luminous hall — the silver-haired, pointed-eared elf Frieren strides confidently at the front, flanked by a blue-uniformed young woman, while behind them a red-haired girl and a purple-haired figure follow close, with two more enigmatic characters lingering in the background. Abe's watercolor-tinged art gives the whole scene a quietly atmospheric pull, balancing a sense of arrival with just a hint of uncertainty on each face. Published by Ki-oon Shonen in 2022, this volume is a fine entry point into one of contemporary manga's most thoughtful fantasy series.
