Joss Whedon's creator-owned Slayer saga continues with this 2001 Dark Horse series, and the cover by Karl Moline and Andy Owens sets an urgent tone — a massive, snarling red demon looms over a fallen Fray, who clutches what appears to be a futuristic weapon as she struggles on debris-strewn pavement. The raw power of that image captures exactly the kind of street-level, high-stakes atmosphere Whedon built his reputation on, transplanted here into a gritty far-future setting. Part two of eight, "The Calling" is already making clear this miniseries has plenty of teeth.
