When townspeople discover the gruesome repository and try to chop down the tree, they are warned away by an old woman who claims the cursed tree will destroy them first. A man named Carlton is hypnotized by a sinister figure who plans to use post-hypnotic suggestion to drive him mad, but Carlton escapes and the plot is thwarted. The Monster, learning that one of his three brothers is alive and living as a painter named John, seeks revenge against his remaining enemies, believing John has also become a decomposed mass at the bottom of a quicksand pit.
