Frances hämtas av din faster Ada till ett stort och dunkelt hus i staden. Där bor även hennes farfar, som glömt det mesta utom missnöjet med sina barns förehavanden. Frances utforskar sin nya omgivning; grannen Louise och hennes vinthundar samt en mindre solkig orsak till sin pappas död. Ada, familjens ofrivilliga skyddsängel, får ta natten till hjälp om hon vill vara ifred. På varsitt håll, Ada om natten och Frances om dagen, blir de båda bekanta med Louise.
