Four Eyes #1
Four Eyes #1 (2008) kicks off with a haunting, sun-drenched memory from the Great Depression: ten-year-old Enrico and his family at the beach, where a terrifying encounter with a fleeing father and a baby dragon in a sack sets the stage for a life forever changed. Written by Joe Kelly and illustrated by Max Fiumara—with cover art also by Fiumara—the issue lingers on the weight of loss and the quiet desperation of a boy trying to survive in a world where dragons aren’t myth. The story pulls back the curtain on a hidden arena where giant dragons fight to the death, and Enrico’s past begins to catch up with him.

During the Great Depression, Enrico and his family take a rare day off to relax at the beach. When his father walks off and is gone too long, Enrico follows and watches in horror as his father runs from a cave with a baby dragon in a bag and the raging mother burns him to a crisp. After his father's funeral, mob boss Boccioni comes to Enrico's house and collects the baby dragon. Things are hard without a father and ten year old Enrico struggles at menial jobs to help his mother financially. Enrico sneaks into an arena where he finds a roaring crowd watching giant dragons battling to the death.
