This is an anthology issue featuring literary adaptations. "The Miller's Daughter," adapted from Émile Zola, follows a woman and man who fall in love during the French invasion of Rocreuse; after years of happiness together and a son, war separates them, and the woman discovers her lover's true identity has been concealed. The second story shown concerns a government official named Nantas whose mistress Flavie has disappeared; Nantas rises to prominence in the Chamber of Deputies and becomes Finance Minister, but his position and fortune are threatened by questions about Flavie's whereabouts and his relationship with her, ultimately leading to scandal and the revelation of family secrets.
