Vertigo's horror anthology Flinch delivers another unsettling chapter with this September 1999 issue, and the cover by Stephen John Phillips and José Villarrubia sets an immediately disturbing tone — a suited figure seated on a bench, mouth wide open in a scream, his head engulfed in flame, while two other figures on either side of him burn entirely. The anthology format means multiple voices contribute to the dread within, with Kent Williams handling all creative duties on "A Gift of Friendship."
