Firehair, the red-haired white daughter of the Sioux, leads her people in battle against enemy forces, including confrontations with the renegade Black Daw and his warriors who threaten her tribe's wagons. The story shifts to a domestic scene where Firehair is welcomed to a castle by a man named Roger, who has long dreamed of marrying her, though a curse threatens to destroy their union. In a separate sequence, hunters pursuing game encounter supernatural demons and a tree tribe that attack them savagely, forcing the hunters to flee to safety while one of their party steals a sacred flame-bow from the creatures.
