BOOM! Studios acquired the Firefly comics license from Dark Horse Comics in 2018, publishing an ongoing series, miniseries, graphic novels, and one-shots across six years, all considered canonical to the television series and the 2005 film Serenity. By 2024, the publisher signaled a turn toward individual character origins, beginning with this issue. Writer Sam Humphries, who had already worked in the BOOM! Firefly corner on the Firefly: The Fall Guys miniseries, was tapped to script; colorist Gloria Martinelli crossed over from the same prior series; and artist Giovanni Fabiano, whose design challenge was rendering young versions of established characters from scratch, made his comics debut on the project. In his own press-release statement, Fabiano called it 'an honor and a great responsibility to create the concept of the young versions of these characters from scratch.'
