“All the Best Heroes Are Orphans”

In "All the Best Heroes Are Orphans," writer Phil Hester and artist Andy Kuhn deliver a raw, emotionally charged chapter as Duncan faces an impossible choice: honor his father Belloc’s final command to destroy the last robot—and himself—before it can be used against them. With wrenching precision, the story unfolds in a moment of quiet devastation, where sacrifice and legacy collide in the ashes of a dying man’s final breath. The cover by Andy Kuhn captures the weight of that moment in stark, haunting detail.

Mortally wounded, Belloc tells Duncan that he must destroy the remaining robot with the spear currently impaled within his chest. He knows this will kill him and orders Duncan to destroy his body and tell no one of his death, lest his enemies learn. Tearfully, Duncan allows his father to die, destroys the robot, then incinerates Belloc's remains.
