Oleg the Brave was the leader of a band of Vikings, who had penetrated deep into the Plains of Russia and built a fort on the banks of the River Volga. Barundai the Terrible, a fearsome Tartar leader, had sworn to crush Oleg and destroy the fort, and had gathered many Tartar tribes together for this purpose.
