A soldier named Alan struggles with self-doubt during his first combat experience in the mountains near Mt. Yukosi, fearing he may be unfit for battle. When enemy forces attack unexpectedly, Alan overcomes his hesitation and fights alongside his buddy George, using ammunition and gunfire to help repel the assault. After the skirmish, exhausted but emboldened, Alan and George build a small fire and plan their escape, eventually receiving orders to scout ahead ten miles to determine the enemy's positions as their unit prepares to push further back toward Mt. Yukosi.

A college-educated soldier finds himself assigned to the same combat unit as Tony, a tough, resentful infantryman who despises him for his education and never misses a chance to remind him he's just a "bookworm." When their unit digs in to hold a Korean hill against overwhelming odds, the two men must overcome their bitter rivalry as the real test of battle—survival itself—forces them to confront what truly matters. Tim discovers that courage and loyalty matter far more than book learning, and that sometimes the most educated decision is to put aside pride and save a life, no matter the cost.
