In "Operation Rathole," Lieutenant Monroe and volunteers from Dunstan's submarine crew are ordered on a dangerous mission near Guadalcanal to sabotage Japanese ships and planes by destroying lighthouse, buoy, and beacon navigation aids. A German-staffed cruiser commanding British and American seamen moves south of the ice pack to the Arctic, where the crew must walk across pack ice toward Cape Huk; the plan relies on surprise and the desolate terrain to succeed. When Japanese forces pursue the battleship, the men use U-boats as cover to approach their target, and though they encounter enemy submarines, they manage to sink or sabotage the vessels before being rescued.
