The main story, "The Hero Called Horn," follows fifteen-year-old Jeff Horn, whose father was killed by the enemy during World War II in Southeast Asia. Colonel Matheson recruits Jeff to serve as a guide for a covert demolition unit tasked with destroying the strategically vital Lu-Chow Bridge, which the Japanese are using as an assembly point for heavy equipment and tanks. Jeff, who knows the jungle terrain and native languages, leads the guerrilla unit through dangerous territory, and the squadron wages a fierce assault on the bridge, ultimately succeeding in their mission despite heavy opposition and casualties.
