“Name Of The Game”

Charlton's Fightin' Army #66 (1965) puts the human cost of combat front and center, with cover art by Pat Masulli and Rocco Mastroserio depicting a rugged, green-beret-wearing soldier standing protectively beside a young child amid smoke and smoldering rubble, rifle in hand. The speech bubbles hint at the moral weight soldiers carried in the field, and the banner promising answers to "the questions the whole world is asking" in the story "The Bully" gives the issue a pointed, topical edge. Writer Joe Gill and artist Charles Nicholas, inked by Vince Alascia, bring that same earnest intensity to the interior — a 12-cent package that wore its conscience openly.
