“Chapter 7: Sheltered Cats”
About this Issue

Feral #7 (October 30, 2024) serves as the opening chapter of the series' second story arc, resetting the survivors' situation with maximum dramatic pressure — Lord missing, Patch now fully infected, and Elsie thrust among strangers — while introducing the 'creepy old shack' and its enigmatic Cat Lady, a location that drives the next several issues. Most significantly for collectors tracking character debuts, Ghost, the deaf white cat who becomes a pivotal recurring cast member from issue #11 onward, makes his first-ever appearance as an early-bird cameo at the very end of this issue. The issue also delivers the series' clearest in-world worldbuilding to date, with a news broadcast establishing that the 'Lyssa-8' rabies outbreak is affecting the northeastern United States on a societal scale. As the launch point of arc 2 — later collected in Feral Vol. 2: Cat Lady — it is the structural keystone of what readers and critics have recognized as an even darker and more ambitious chapter of the run.

History

Feral is a creator-owned Image Comics series by writer Tony Fleecs, artist Trish Forstner, inker Tone Rodriguez, and colorist Brad Simpson, the same core team behind their 2021 breakout Stray Dogs. The series launched in March 2024 and gained enough momentum that Feral #1 went to a third printing by May 2024. Issue #7 arrived on October 30, 2024, as the first chapter of arc 2, which was later collected in trade paperback form in March 2025. The creative team leaned into the series' established practice of horror-movie-homage variant covers, with issue #7 offering covers riffing on May and Se7en alongside a Bakersfield Comic Con exclusive.

Trivia · 9 facts

  • Published October 30, 2024, by Image Comics; story and cover by Tony Fleecs (writer) and Trish Forstner (artist), with inks by Tone Rodriguez and colors by Brad Simpson.
  • First appearance of Ghost, the deaf white cat who becomes a significant recurring character from issue #11 onward — he appears in the final panel of this issue as an early-bird cameo in the Cat Lady's house.
  • Opening chapter of Story Arc 2 (the 'Cat Lady' arc), collected in Feral Vol. 2 (March 12, 2025); arc 2 runs through issue #10.
  • Arc 2's narrative begins with the core group fractured: Lord is separated from the group, Patch has been scratched and is succumbing to the Lyssa-8 infection, and Elsie is on the run with Gigi and her three newborn kittens.
  • A news broadcast within the issue explicitly frames the Lyssa-8 rabies outbreak as a northeastern U.S. regional crisis, the clearest geographic and epidemiological scope statement in the series to date.
  • The final panel includes background Easter-egg cameos of animated feline pop-culture figures (Duchess, O'Malley, Mewsette, Azrael, and Garfield) among the uninfected cats — a recurring Easter egg tradition in the series.
  • Issue shipped with five cover versions: Cover A (Forstner & Fleecs), Cover B (Tony Fleecs 'May' homage variant), Cover C (1:10 Tony Fleecs virgin variant), Cover D (1:25 Meredith McClaren virgin variant), a Dynamite Entertainment Trish Forstner 'Se7en' homage variant, and a Bakersfield Comic Con 2024 exclusive variant by Tony Fleecs.
  • The Feral series exists in the same shared universe as Stray Dogs (Image, 2021) by the same creative team; issue #7's cover features an orange cat who does not actually appear in the interior story — a noted cover/content discrepancy flagged by the fan community.
  • The series earned an American Library Association Outstanding Comics Award for Young Adults Series Honor Book designation in 2025 and has been translated into French.
