Feral launched in March 2024 from Image Comics, created by Tony Fleecs and Trish Forstner — the same team behind the 2021 horror hit Stray Dogs — with colors by Brad Simpson and additional art by Tone Rodriguez. The series grew from Fleecs and Forstner's established creative partnership and their shared love of horror and Don Bluth-style animation aesthetics. From its earliest issues, the two titles were set in the same fictional world, but it was not until the fifth arc, beginning with the silent-interlude issue #21 (itself a deliberate homage to the wordless G.I. Joe #21 from 1985), that the creative team built the narrative scaffolding to bring the two casts together, with #22 serving as the formal crossover launch point. The series earned an American Library Association Outstanding Comics Award for Young Adults Series Honor Book citation in 2025, underlining its crossover appeal beyond traditional direct-market readership.
